The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

SCD is a grain-free, lactose-free, sugar-free treatment for autism, gastrointestinal problems, celiac disease, cystic fibrosis and other health conditions.

My teenaged son Jackie has Asperger’s Syndrome, an anxiety disorder, and Crohn’s disease. SCD helped send his Crohn’s into remission and has vastly improved his symptoms of autism. Twice hospitalized for anxiety and placed on adult levels of psychiatric drugs, he is now prescription free and calmer than ever.

Before having your child begin this or any other diet, consult a nutrition friendly doctor to have a food allergy screening test done, and follow his guidance in making sure all your child’s nutritional needs are met. Prior to starting the SCD diet it’s also recommended that you read Elaine Gottschall’s book Breaking the Vicious Cycle .   However, I truthfully didn’t do this, instead garnering her wisdom from other sources such as www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info

SCD is daunting at first. Being autistic, my son is very picky about food. Ritualistic about what he eats and how it must look on the plate, the shift was jarring. In fact he screamed for an entire month while detoxifying. Then suddenly he was better. Much better. And now he is as riveted to his new diet as he was to his old one. His attitude has shifted from viewing eating as something he does because he has to, to something he’s excited about and loves.
